Research over two decades has indicated consistently that nearly half of expatriate assignments fail, ie do not last the contracted term. The biggest factor affecting the success of expatriate assignments is the accompanying spouse, i.e. his/her ability to settle quickly into an unfamiliar environment and, thereafter, his/her level of satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) regarding the ongoing situation.

- identifying, through their own eyes, the specific needs and challenges of expatriate trailing spouses in their efforts to settle down quickly and happily in today's Mainland China in support of a partner's career;
- bringing that knowledge to sponsoring employers, HR practitioners and relocations professionals to enhance their understanding of this critical success factor;
- investigating the current level of acculturation support provided to expatriate trailing spouses from the perspective of sponsoring employers in China;
- identifying other sources of support, both formal and informal.
