Experience China
Trailing Spouse Survey
Invitation to Participants and Background Information
Are you an expatriate spouse or long-term partner living in China?
Did you come to China in support of your husband/wife/partner's career?
Did you relocate to China after 31 December 2002?
When you arrived in China, were you unable to speak the Chinese language?

If you can answer ‘YES’ to all of these questions, then You are invited to participate in a research project of international human resource management, and in particular the study of expatriate relocations, with a specific situational focus on Mainland China.

I would like to learn about your needs and the unique challenges you are facing, or have overcome, in your efforts to establish your ‘home away from home’, and about the level of understanding and support you have received from your husband/wife/partner’s employer and other local sources.

Background And Purpose

Did you know that research over the past 20 years has persistently concluded that the trailing spouses play a major role in relocation assignment success?  It’s true!  Typically charged with the responsibility of self/family integration and cultural adjustment, the ‘trailing spouse’ is a proven critical success factor.  It seems surprising then that, up until now, very little research has actually explored the contributing factors from the perspective of such important key players.

Please share with me your personal knowledge and experience and tell me, from your own perspective, about

The People’s Republic of China is, without a doubt, one of today’s global ‘hot spots’ for international business and, therefore, expatriate relocation. I believe that there are great mutual benefits available to expatriate families and host employers if initial challenges for integration can be overcome quickly and effectively.  The overall purpose of this study, therefore, will be to raise awareness of the actual and current situation, provide valuable information to employers, human resource practitioners and relocations service providers, identify available sources of support for expatriate families and consider how all stakeholders can work together to improve the chances of assignment success in China.
